The Rainbow Fund at Berger Health Foundation Receives Gift from Jeff Ankrom Golf Classic

July 2, 2008 –- Circleville, OH Harry Rubin, representing the Jeff Ankrom Memorial Golf Tournament, recently presented a gift of nearly $16,000 to the Rainbow Fund at Berger Health Foundation. The funds were raised from the generous sponsors, donors, golfers and presenting sponsor, The Savings Bank, at the annual tournament, held June 20 at Crown Hill Golf Club.

The Rainbow Fund was created last year from part of the event proceeds. According to Rubin, the assistance program was named the Rainbow Fund because, "A rainbow is always considered a sign of hope, and it is the goal of the Ankrom committee to bring hope to local cancer patients in need."

Since the fund's inception, more than 130 local Bradley Cancer Center patients and their families have received assistance with home and car repairs, groceries, gas and transportation, utilities, medical equipment, appliances, furniture, medications and even personal needs.

"The intent of the Rainbow Fund is to assist Bradley Cancer Center patients with uncovered financial needs for, but not limited to, simple things during their treatment and recovery process," said Rubin.

"The Rainbow Fund has had great impact on the community members that the funds have assisted," said Ruth Messick, Berger Health Foundation Executive Director. "One of my most profound moments I have had since coming to this community was when someone we had assisted came by my office and handed me a $10 bill. He had raised the money by selling a few of his things and wanted to help contribute to the needs of someone else."

The Berger Health Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization formed in 2004. The Foundation perpetuates the legacy of philanthropy and programmatic growth for healthcare and wellness as envisioned and delivered by Berger Health System. The Bradley Cancer Center is one of a number of Berger healthcare programs supported by the Foundation. To make a gift or for more information, please call 420-8209.

Foundation Supporters Challenged to Make Life an Adventure

July 15, 2008 -- Circleville, OH Nearly 50 donors, volunteers and guests were challenged and encouraged to reach for the impossible at Monday night's Berger Health Foundation Annual Meeting. Diane and Hap Eaton presented photographs and anecdotes from their 10,300-mile bicycle trip across 28 states. Their ride raised awareness of Alpha 1, a lung and liver disorder that affects approximately 100,000 people in the United States, including an Eaton family member.

Diane is Wellness Director at Berger Health System, and Hap is a retired mechanical engineering manager with Thomson Consumer electronics. "This ride has been a dream for a long time," said Diane. "We have always wanted to be able to take our time and stop when we wanted and experience more of the country that we are riding through." The Eatons used the theme "Everyday is an adventure and God is always there!" for their year-long trek.

"What ever your dream--however impossible you might think it to be--if it stays in your heart, you must answer its call," agreed Hap.

Held at the new Berger Medical Center in Orient, the Annual Meeting acknowledged the contributions of Board members, donors and volunteers. Leading the Way benefactors were recognized for their dedication to the Foundation and for unusual ways they have found to build support.

"We started the Leading the Way program last year because we had people step up in such amazing ways," said Ruth Messick, Executive Director of Berger Health Foundation. "Foundation volunteers exhibit a deep level of ownership. I see that especially among the Board."

Last year's Leading the Way benefactor and Foundation Board Vice President Charles Bradley distributed the awards to this year's recipients. Several Board members were among those named Leading the Way supporters, including Board president Larry Elliott, charter Board members Dr. Gary Gillen, Pat Hughey, Susan Strawser and Larry Thornhill, as well as newer members Bob Sneed and Jon Veith.

In addition, CBIZ, Constance Care Home Healthcare and Solid Rock Builders and Developers were recognized as 2007 event sponsors for the Foundation's Golf Classic. Appreciation was expressed for Bob McKelvey, also one of the charter Board members, who is retiring after four years, including two as President.

"I am always moved when I am reminded of the Foundation's purpose. The impact we have on people's lives is beyond being measured," said Elliott as he shared stories of those who have received assistance through the Foundation. "It is wonderful to be part of what happens here."

More than 1,300 donors contributed nearly $680,000 during 2007--the highest level in the Foundation's history. Gifts supported the work of Berger programs such as Berger Hospice Care, Circle of Caring-Faith in Action, Bradley Cancer Center, cardiac rehab and healthcare scholarships.

Berger Health Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization formed in 2004. It perpetuates the legacy of philanthropy and programmatic growth for healthcare and wellness in and around Pickaway County as envisioned and delivered by Berger Health System.
